Late Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed Khan (1935 – 2021) was an Indian humanitarian, educationist, and social reformer. Born in Pune, Maharashtra, he earned his MBBS degree from Madras University in 1963 and later specialized in surgery with an M.S. from Stanley Medical College, Chennai.
In 1966, at the age of 31, Dr. Khan founded the **Al-Ameen Educational Society**, a pioneering initiative aimed at providing essential educational facilities, particularly for minority communities. This marked the beginning of the "Al-Ameen Movement," which has since grown to encompass over 250 educational institutions, serving more than 2.5 lakh students across India, ranging from pre-nursery schools to medical and engineering colleges.
Beyond education, Dr. Khan's vision extended to banking and health sectors, all focused on uplifting disadvantaged sections of society. He was also a founder-trustee of the Urdu daily newspaper, the Salar Daily, and served as Pro Chancellor/Treasurer of Aligarh Muslim University.
Recognized for his profound contributions, Dr. Khan received numerous accolades, including the Karnataka Rajyothsava Award (1990) for Education, the AFMI Award, and the Kempegowda Award. His legacy continues to inspire through the institutions he founded and the "Dr Mumtaz Ahmed Khan Best Teachers’ Awards" named in his honor.
